Hand Arm Vibration (HAV)

Regular exposure to HAV may cause a range of permanent injuries to the hands and arms, this is often referred to as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, the most common disease is often called vibration white finger. The diseases are painful and can be disabling for employees who suffer from the effects of vibration exposure.

Whole Body Vibration (WBV)

Long term exposure to WBV can cause back pain, the shocks and vibration associated operating some mobile machines, dump trucks, tractors, excavators, fork lift trucks etc are thought to increase the risks of developing back pain.

Whilst there is no specific UK legislation covering exposure to vibration, there are requirements to control the risks to health under the Health and Safety at Work Act and The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

The EC Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive was adopted on July 21 May 2002 imposing minimum health and safety standards for controlling the risks from exposure to vibration.
